ULTRAVIOLETS (UV) RAYS
UVA : these are responsible for premature ageing of the eye. UVB : these cause irritation to the cornea. UVC : more powerful than UVA’s and UVB’s, they can be fatal to the organism
PROTECTION
Julbo lenses offer 100% protection against UVs: UVAs, UVBs, and UVCs.Classed as OPTICAL CLASS 1, their quality is guaranteed by international standards.
VISIBLE LIGHT
When the eye perceives light, it can cause a dazzling sensation, visual disturbance leading to fatigue, temporary reduction of sight and eye pain if exposure is prolonged. Even when briefly exposed to intense light, the retina may be damaged and suffer vision impairment.
Each Julbo lens corresponds to a protection category indicating the percentage of visible light transmitted to the eye. There is a suitable category for every type of need.
INFRARED
They diffuse the sun’s heat and represent 50% of its energy. They heat the tissues, dry out tears reducing their protective qualities and can cause eye disorders. The warming of the atmosphere due to pollution increases the effects of infrared rays.THE EYE : Part1
The eye is made up of different components:The cornea: transparent protective envelope, 300 times more sensitive to sunlight than the skin.
The iris: coloured membrane surrounding the pupil, determines eye colour.
The pupil: central part of the eye varying according to brightness
Crystalline lens: transparent positive lens which adapts itself to object distance, reflects light
Vitreous body: gelatinous liquid located between the crystalline lens and the retina
The retina: plate which is hypersensitive to light, transmits information to the optic nerve and to the brain
The optic nerve: transforms the images perceived by the retina into nerve impulses.
THE EYE : Part2
The eye naturally filters part of the rays:The crystalline lens absorbs part of the UVB and 95%
of the UVA rays
The cornea absorbs part of the UVB and infrared rays.
Eye disorders caused by the sun are: corneal, crystalline lens (cataract) and retina (age-related macular degeneration) injuries and corneal inflammation (keratitis, snow blindness).
Sunlight plays a significant role in the physiological ageing process of the crystalline lens. Long-sightedness occurs earlier in those living in hot countries or at high altitude. The heat and quantity of UV rays are the major causes.
